5 Essential Tips to Survive the Silly Season in Hospitality and Retail

November 8, 2024 0 Comments

Scary to think we only have just over 7 weeks left before Christmas!  This year has flown by too quickly.  I remember writing the blog for end of the year 2023 and it feels like the other day.  This time of year, is known as silly season, especially in our industries with the shopping centres extending their hours, meaning your shifts are extended.  The hotels are fully booked and the guests are even more demanding.  The restaurants are busy and the people seem to overindulge and throw their manners out the door.  We also need to stay motivated and some how also enjoy the Festive Season.

Here are 5 tips to survive the silly season:

  1. Get enough rest
  • We know we all need an extra 5 hours a day to fit everything in with the 12 hours working hours and family and chores, but it is very important to get enough sleep and rest.
  • Try deep breathing to help you stay composed and remain calm.
  • Avoid lying awake worrying about the next day, plan ahead and make lists to help you remember.
  1. Stay hydrated
  • Enjoy the holiday season and treat yourself on your off days but try not to overindulge.
  • Eat healthy and drink lots of water. With limited time, we often skip packing lunch or snacks, but try to avoid takeout, energy drinks, or soda. Grap an apple or banana and rather buy a bottle of water to keep you hydrated.
  1. Do your stretches
  • This might sound overrated, especially for you youngsters, but stretching every morning can make a big difference in your day.
  • Exercising daily is ideal, but most of us don’t have that energy or time to go to the gym. Check out easy 10 / 20 min exercising videos on YouTube you can do at home in your lounge!
  • Remember moderate exercising increases your endorphins which are hormones produced in the brain that act as natural pain relievers and can improve your mood and sense of well-being!
  1. Make time for yourself
  • Even though this time of year is extremely stressful and the working hours are intense, try and make time for yourself and have some fun!
  • Spoil yourself with little treats which will make you happy and not feel guilty.
  • It is the season of giving, so try to give yourself a break and enjoy some downtime. If you’re lucky enough to take time off work, use it to recharge so you’re fresh for the new year.
  1. Don’t overspend
  • This is maybe the most difficult as you want to give and enjoy the holiday season as much as the client you are serving or helping, but we need to stay realistic with our budgets.
  • Stick to your budget as much as possible. If you spend a bit more on gifts, don’t worry—but avoid overspending that could cause stress and sleepless nights.

Even though the Crazy Season will test us and try and get the better of us, we must keep going to survive the silly season; stay positive, smile often, and be kind!
